The Jesuits in Paraguay are said to have formed
and supported a flourishing little nation, z with
very little assistance from this sanction, as at
least with a very strong predominance of the Re
-ligious. The System of those Jesuits maybe awhich is a
system of total blindness in the many, and of half-
seeing in the few, may be for aught I know
have been a very beneficial one in the circumstances in
which it was established, since it has areport of the effectsand
in favour of its effects of the apparition of a writer of very command-
-ing judgment in his its favour of its principles. But it is too
late to transplant it to advantage here, even with all our Au-
thor's care to lead and cultivate it.
