it after all, would be glad to have somebody
to do it for them: that is to say, somebody in
whose power it should be, to make the courseconduct
takenobserved by the Law conformable to what he
should predict, as the consequence of those the part in question embracing
that correspondent side of the alternative in his conduct which the interpreter declares to be correspondent to it.. An example
or two ismay be necessary to make this clear.
Example Libelsfor
a Law against
Libels.
There is a Law, suppose concerning State--Libels , definingdistinguishing
what shall and what shall not be deemed a Libel ,
and punished or tolerated accordingly.
[I wish heartily Would to God that this was, as it might and ought to be,
more than supposition!] I wish to make I think it of use to communicate some
observations concerning the conduct of affairs: but
am afraid to do it, doubting, tho' with the Law
before me, whether what I have to say , would
or would not be deemed a libel.
Example. Concerning Testaments.
[There is an Law collection assemblage of Laws concerning
Testaments : part of them employ'd in declaring
what sort of dispositions by Testament shall or
shall not be valid. [Would to God also, that this also were more than supposition!] I am about to make my
Will: but , tho' with I mean to make a particular disposition of a part
of my estate: but tho' with the Law before me,
I cannot satisfy myself whether that disposition
is among those that it pronounces to be valid.]
