very remote antiquity. In the time of Edward the
Confessor, there is a Charter in Store quoted from Clifford,
directed to the Bishop Burgesses and Portreeves of London
which grants to Christ, and the holy Apostle St Peter
at Westminster, full freedom over all the land belonging
to that holy place.

This not being a necessary subject of disquisition with
Vestrys it was therefore observed at a period far more
modern the inhabitants considered themselves injured
in having a right of common extending over Six
hundred and Eighty Eight acres of land of which
Tothil Fields was a part witheld from them and
in consequence applied to the Dean and Chapter. Then is extant a report of Richd Tenche, Steward
to the Lord Burghley, High Steward of Westr
dated 1592 in answer to a commission from his
Lordship to inquire into the nature of several trespasses,
which had been said to have been committed
by the inhabitants of the parishes of St Margaret
and St Martins in the fields, in what he terms
the Lammas grounds, that is to say the 688
acres before mentioned.

A diligent inquirer, might, from the records
at present existing trace and adduce a long concatenation
of the Rights of the Abbots and Brotherhood
of St Peter, and of the parish of St Margaret, but
they will always observe that the right of the latter
of what nature so ever it may be, grew out of the
former. The right of the parish of St John in the
same way, is derived from that of St Margarets.

After much desultory conversation it was unanimously
agreed to wave the question and neither
until the plan had been more explained, and had made
