Circle and Ring
confusion and ambiguity
from their non-
distinction

The ring does what
the three right lines do
in the triangle, and the
four in the parallellogram

Circle and Ring — Considerable can not but be the
obscurity produced by the graphical mode of presenting
to the mind the impressions and thence the ideas of these two objects
The circle is an area a superficies — the ring a boundary:
— the boundary of that same superficies. In the case
of this curve-linear figure this one boundary corresponds
to the three boundary lines taken together which have place in
the triangular and trilateral right line figures and the four which have place
in the case of the quadrangular and quadrilateral right lined
figures — the parallellogram.

14** or 2
By compasses is
described what is
called "a circle", but
is no more than a
ring.

In the way in which what is called a circle is described
by the instrument — a pair of compasses by which what is called a circle is described
what is described is not the a circle but a ring: not
the superficies, but only the boundary line of that same super

14*** or 3
By nothing but a
twig or a bar could
a circle be described

Requisite for the describing of that which might with
truth be denominated a circle could be that of the twig
if a nature-sprung radius were employed; a w
or a rod if an art-sprung radius were employed.

14**** or 4
Boundaries of areas
(superficies) are thus
throughout confounded
with the areas & confusion
thus in the minds
of learners and even
teachers.

This inattention to the distinction between the boundaries
of areas and the areas themselves seems to have place throughout
the whole mass of publication on the subject
of geometry: and it can not but be productive of no small
degree of indistinctness and confusion of ideas in the minds of
learners not to speak of teachers.
