§ Means of elucidation &c

Give Expression of to steps
of the demonstration
by signs — call this the
holo diagrammatic mode.
or say holo semantic
mode.

8. Expression given to the steps of the demonstration
by signs instead of verbal discourse. N. B. The signs being
once for all explained by verbal discourse. Use, giving
facility and rapidity to revision and confrontation for the
purpose of tracing the connection: and thus as it were
detecting the plan — the scheme — the contrivance of the inventor.
Call the above the holo diagrammatic or holo semantic mode.

9. Expression to do by
verbal discourse without
diagrams — so in Euclid's
propositions: use, rendering
conception general; not
confined to particular diagram.

9. Giving expression to the several steps of the
demonstration by verbal discourse alone without the
aid of diagrams. N. B. In Euclid's Elements this is the
mode or say form of expression employed in the enunciation
of the propositions themselves. But it ceases to be
employed in the case of the demonstrations: the additions
included which are made to the original figure for the
purpose of the demonstration. N. B. For this purpose
it will be necessary to suppose the plane surface which forms
the subject matter of the proposition laid on the table
in a certain direction with reference to the reader:
suppose parallel to his body as he sits: this done
reference made to his position denominations will be
given to the several lines right or curved in question
expressive of their relations to one another in respect of
position this system of denomination must be so composed
as to serve alike for every proposition and every part
of it.

Use of this mode of expression rendering the conceptions
formed of every such object general: in such
sort as not to be confined to the individual figure
in and by the diagram by which or rather the appendages
to the diagram by which expression is given to
the results of the steps taken for the purpose of the demonstration

In Hamilton diagrams
employed for the
propositions & demonstrations.

In Hamilton's Conic Sections in several instances the
mode employed in Euclid in giving expression to the demonstrations
and the results of the preparatory operations is
employed in the case of the enunciation given to the propositions likewise
