Mathematics particularly
requires indication
of use — per se, nothing
more useless — none
requires so much & severe
attention — none
less pleasing;
Chemistry, Mechanics,
even Anatomy, &c &c amuse —
in short all objects
of the senses.
If there be any one one branch of Art and
Science more than another in which need of this
indication of use is in a more particular degree
prominent it is this same Mathematics great &
abundant are the uses of it true but take it by
itself make no application of it to any other branch
of art and science nothing can be more useless
at the same time nothing is there which in an
equal degree presents a demand for attention which
is as much as to say mental labour: none in
which that labour is less sweetened with collateral
and incidental circumstance — none in which
that labour is so severe Chemistry teems with
amusement: of Mechanics no branch is altogether
destitute of it even in Anatomy if disgust is
occasional amusement is perpetual the same thing
may be said of whatsoever belongs to the three
branches of natural History Mineralogy Botany
alius Phytology & Zoology in a word whatsoever
branch of Art and Science presents to view in the
object of sense brings in amusement along with it
Mathematics alone presenting as it does nothing
to sense making even boast as we shall see of
having nothing to do with sense is of itself
completely barren of all such labour sweetening
