Included in the import
of equivalence is that
of synonym, a term
which though function
which equivalent as then
applied is not, is
inadequate, not being
applied to many
worded locutions or
say phrases

6. In and by both of them these operations indication of this identity,
will be seen shewn to be performed and equivalence will be shewn to and
seen to be performed: in the case of synonymation, in the
strict and literal sense of that appellative, the two objects
or say subject matters between the one word and another which the equivalen
word
which the equivalence is shewn and may be
seen to have place are one word and another word
but when either of the subject matters consists of words
more than one, this in the strict or say literal sense of the word synonymization
is not true: for giving expression to the two
subject matters in question another wo a different word
most be employed: say the word locution: a word lately
imported from France, as being applicable employable with equal
propriety to designate a single word or an aggregate

Instruments of discourse
between which equivalence
has place are
1. Words and words
2. Words and phrases
3. Phrases and phrases

7. As to abbreviation what it designates denotes is that of the
two subject matters spoken of as being equivalents the one
of the other the one is shorter than the other, that is to say
that the words of which it consists are in less numbers;
and of the advantages or say beneficial effects of which the substitution of the smaller
to the greater number is produced indication will
be given in the appropriate place

In comparative brevity
consists the advantages
obtained through equivalence:
the more brief
being substituted to
its otherwise equivalent
locution and abbreviation
thus informative

Thus is logic the
prime source of improvement
in posology.

8. Thus by the bye it will be seen how it is that
if by the present work any beneficial information
is afforded, it is by logic — by the application of this
branch of art-and-science to the posology — to the branch
of art-and-science here in question — in a word to
posology that the effect is produced.
