By application of
the mind to this branch,
the hold of at

to be acquired

A sort of collateral advantage use not uncommonly ascribed to
posology is — the increasing the aptitude of the mind as
the exercise of the faculty of ratiocination in its application
to other subjects — in a word to all other subjects in
general and accordingly in particular to the moral including
the political and the religious branches of art and
science.

But the more closely attentively the peculiar nature of the case
is attended to, the more closely it will clear will be the principles that in this
way it is not of any characteristic use

Towards that end True it is — the one thing it does: almost is the
inuring the mind to the habit of close attention. But
in this way it is no more than upon a par with whist or chess, for
example: and its use is — not inversely but directly in the
ratio of the quantity of labor bestowed upon it:applied di
immediately to the those other branches of art and science and not to posology, the same
quantity of labor would yield still more use

☞ Draw to notice the small examples of the application of proportionality on morals and politics instead of
crude and indefinite assertion
in regard to the quantities of the objects in question.

But suppose the

acquirement directly,
than through the in

intrinsically useful.

Time and labour
no work is the result
of this misapplication

Attention is instrument without which no achievement can be
made in the cultivation of any branch of art and science — no
information can be obtained in respect of any thing
which belongs to any part of the field of art and science.

The stronger the force of attention applied to any part of the field
of art and science the greater the success with which the cultivation
of it is likely to be attended. In Whatsoever degree the force of a more attention
is exercised, the greater is the advancement he is capable of
making in any part of the area of art and science

All this is true and incontestable. But it what is no less true
is — that it is equally true of application the same quality of
attention when if applied to any other branch of art and science.
It belongs not therefore to this, or possessing in this way more than to
any one of those two other branches

Take the the art and science of legislation, and Suppose then it were and to make the
greatest pr, or is in any p — what is the course I should take
Should I in the first instance begin with taking in hand the study art and science of
mathematics. No such thing: a more advantageous and with
course to take would be to take to it art and science of legislation or to
first — Why so? Because in that case, whatever quality of attention
I

I was capable of employing
would be applied to the best
advantage: it would be applied
at once to the p subject
without being any of it

, or collateral use
