Posology
Ch Uses
§. 2 Collateral uses
8
Real collateral use, this
habit of entertaining
and giving expression to
the idea of proportionality
or say gradation, in
prediction in and
quantity when, if that idea is
not employed, what
is predicted will be
true is to no degree
when, false as to all
or most others
Still however, one way there is in which to idea belonging
not to physics but to ethics or say to mind application may be
made of pure posology and to one which may without impropriety be stated, collateral as
may be seen to be derivable from it
The mind and its operations can not be spoken of otherwise
than by words by to which the idea of quantity is associated: every
thing belongs to mind being as it were the shadow of
something correspondent to it which belongs to body: whenever
spoken of, mind is spoken of as if or to it were a body: in no other way
can it be spoken of. Of these fictions, these mental qualities, this
idea planted in the mind will be the clearer, the more determinate
they respectively are
9
This will be found
continually exemplified
in ethical discourses
or deontology private
or public: refer accordingly
from hence, thither;
and from thence
hitherto
An example will make this clear. Take the idea of proportionality.
Proportion — ratio — degree of quantity and quality — scale
all the , and and . Error
has place when what is true only of one degree is spoken of without
hesitation — spoken of as if it were true of all degrees.
