There are two ways of being useful in respect of any
branch of art and science. One is by adding to the progress existing stock of
made in it skill and information possessed already in relation to it by the best instruction: the other is by facilitating giving facility to
the acquisition of the already existing. This way The benefit conferred in this case has again
two branches: 1 the increase is given to the number of those who obtain proficiency
in it: and in the expence a saving is made of time and labour that
would otherwise be employed in the obtaining such proficiency
in it as they would have obtained: say number of proficients
increased: time and labour saved.

In the present state of the branch of art and science
as yet commonly called Mathematics but which as soon as a characteristic
is instituted to an uncharacteristic denomination will
be called Posology, this latter course may be stated as by
far the most more useful one. As Advance has already been
made — not only covering the whole region of use, but extending
far beyond it — extra anno : while
at the same time is the advance as yet made in the art
of facilitating it. To this latter

What it is occupied in is — not the teaching of giving instruction in mathematics, but
the shewing in what mode instruction in that this branch of science
may be given with more advantage it is believed than it has
as yet been given in this branch of art and science.
