Posology

Ch 1 Uses & Abuses
§. Abuses.
Limits to Posology; Use.
Modes of diffusion
1. Elimination

or 1
Fit subject matter
for elimination all
truth not applicable
to practical uses,
i.e. in some assignable
way contributing
to happiness

Lines are either 1. Right, or 2. Curve. This division is
exhaustive

Curve lines are in number and diversity of form
plainly and indisputably infinite

Therefore to shew any ground in respect of valid use
of the time and labour expended in the investigation of the properties
of any assignable curve, a condition sine qua non shall be —
the indication of a practical use derivable from it

or 2
Example — properties
of all curve lines
not having their
archetypes in nature
or not

or 3
But for the line,
the labours of
the posologist would
be infinite.

Plainly infinite in number? Yes — for take any three points
and place them any where, out of them you may make a curve either
they will be contiguous, or not: if contiguous they form a triangle
at one a triangle or a curve: you may consider the figure in either
of these two capacities, or say points of view: if not contiguous you may
consider them as capable of made into an aggregate area, by the
intervention of a line composed of those abovementioned elementary curves.

4
Proof, this. Sole
lines are either right
lines or curve lines

For the mensuration of curve lines, recourse is of
strait lines. So it is in Conic Sections by the different length of strait
lines which are supposed to be parallel and the figure of a
surface, considered as being the surface of a considered as one of the
surfaces brought to view by the section of a cone

5
Right lines are
not diversifiable
otherwise than by
length
in respect of
length.

In the case of a portion of matter, these points are really existing
abuses: as to what see D'A work in the case of a portion of space
they are imaginary alone.

6
But of curve lines
the possible diversifications
are plainly
in number infinite.

7
Proof. Out of any
three points you may
make a line
