Radicalism not dangerous

Note (m) Notes
III
II Ireland

2 Corruption general
Parliaments profligacy

(m 3) Hardy p. 164. Ao 1773?. "The Ministry of Lord Harcourt
was . . . a Ministry of sinister influence; that of his successor,
Lord Buckinghamshire, promulgated imbecillity.

(m ) Hardy p.164. 1773 July 5th Topham Beauclerk to Lord Charlemont.
Extracts. . "What an abominable world do we live in, that
"there should not be above half a dozen honest men in the
"world, and that one of them those should live in Ireland.
"You will, perhaps be shocked at the small portion of honesty
"that I allot to your country; but a sixth part is as much
"as comes to its share; and, for any thing I know to the contrary,
"the other five may be in Ireland too, for I am sure I
"do not know where else to find them . . .p.165. In the very
"sincerity of truth I can say, that I would rather have such a
"friend as you, even at three hundred miles distance, than
"both the Houses of Parliament for my friends in London."

(m )) Hardy p 164. Ao 1774. "When Mr Flood "(the celebrated Orator)" was in London,
"he more than once declared to Mr Forbes " (M.P. for
"Drogheda)" that he had been betrayed oftener, when taking
"an active part in the House of Commons of Ireland, than
"he thought necessary to state. Except some particular persons
"continued he men indeed of the most scrupulous and
"delicate honour, every one whom I entrusted a parliamentary
"motion to, or plan of conduct for the Session, uniformly
"betrayed me."

It would be worth while if it was only in this view to read
the letters of the of Horace Walpole who dies Earl of Orford,
son of Minister Walpole. The wer general not to say universal political depravity
of parliamentary and other public government men is in these
letters a continually recurring theme .. No two men had ever
better opportunities of information on this head, or minds fitter for passing
it right judgment on it, than this man and Topham
Beauclerk.

Beauclerk. Beauclerk
was of the family of the
Dukes of St Albans, and
married a daughter
daughter of the Duke of
Marlborough. Birth,
fashion, wit, science —
all were his. Of such
men the prejudices, if
any could not have been unfavourable to the class thus spoken of.
