§ 3
III Experience
II Ireland
(5) (1) §.3. True cause of
Volunteer extinction
3. Had any official parliamentary reform taken place, any
reform by which democratic ascendency would be established
and the pref predominance given to the universal
interest over every narrower interest, the m
ascendency at that point of the aristocratic interest would which is in opposition to the
universal interest would have been diminished reduced in
various ways and in particular in respect of those
seats, for the possession of which they the Members of the Aristocracy would have
thenceforward have been, as during the Volunteers Association
they had been, dependant on the good opinion
of the people on their good behaviour according to the
opinion formed of entertained concerning it by the people at large. In the
prospect of this disadvantage may be seen the cause the true
and all sufficient and sole cause of the determination
of [the Whigs as well as Tories of Ireland with headed by] Lord Charlemont )
[in concert with the Whigs as well as Tories of England with Charles)
Fox Burton and others as their head,] to exclude)
Parliamentary reform in every efficient shape,
and keep the Associated be Convention with the
Associated Volunteers if when it represented in a check
of mayhem and a inefficiency, and ultimately to
extinguish it.
T In a way so To a very considerable extent a disposition
to give up their seats was displayed expressed by the possessors,
and in particular by Lord Charlemont. But it seems sufficiently
manifest that no such disposition was by him
or any one else really entertained.
