(7) Charlemont treachery

Date of Committee's letter 19th July 1782. Its Further
meeting announced for 20th August — 8th September the day for
the meeting at large — request that before the 20th of
August Lord Charlemont would give "point out a specific
"mode of reform, and the most eligible me steps leading to
"it: and say whether "Volunteers ought to interfere" in favour
of shortening the duration of Parliament's extension of pensioners,
"boosting the number of placemen, and a tax on
"absentees: or any of those." measures and "favour" them
with a set of "resolutions. . . " to be proposed at Dungannon

What these men did not consider, Lord Charlemont
certainly did consider, namely that it eventually his condition might not be altogether
safe if in black and white there were no answers under his hand
under as in terms as explicit as were those of the application
thus made to him. Answer accordingly — On none of
the points any thing to be done except parliamentary reform: and
on that nothing to be said about "the mode" and the mode (says he) is to be left
entirely to the mature deliberation of your Parliament." of
such a Parliament! and these few drops of meaning drowned
in a bucketful of words

Member for Eyram Lord Charlemonts particular friend, Present
the Earl of Bristol as Bishop of Derry. Resolutions many;
one that a Committee of five from each County in that
province Ulsiter (Ulster) be chosen by ballot, to represent
it at a National Convention in the Royal Exchange,
Dublin on the 10th of November next (1782) to digest in
conjunction with the delegates from the other provinces a plan of parliamentary reform," pursue measures to that other adjourn from time to time and so and if necessary convene provincial meetings.

"An address to the
"Volunteers of Munster
"Connaught and Leinster
"accompanied this Resolution." — full of
eloquence." A proposition for "concession of the electors franchise to Catholics was opposed with success by Lord Charlemont's friends.
