Hardy 280.
☞ 9 Feb. 1820. This under Charlemont treachery or at the end?

§ State of the parties At the end of the year 1782 State of the three parties
the monarchical, Aristocratical and Democratical and their relations and aspect
towards each other.

Hardy p.280 Ao 1782 — the ch close.

On this occasion as on all others we see may be seen at work together, the
three contending interests — the monarchical — the aristocratical — and
the democratical. On this occasion as in all others in a Europe the unexemplified one the democratical
having gained a temporary ascendency, in the monarchical
and aristocratical may be seen co-operating in
the hostilities carrying on against the democratical. On
this occasion however it appears that the co-operation was
without concert. The monarchical interest being in the as usual in weak hands
of a weak man [one of those the successive poor creatures who
in the division of the sport among the members of the monarchical
section of the aristocracy are sent over to Ireland
to in the country for a few successive years] the measures
so ill judged were the measures taken in that quarter, that
be by the effect of them those operations the democratical interest, so far from instead of
being overpowered, was excited early, and by the execution
strengthened. The aristocratical party with headed by Lord
Charlemont in that country the most accomplished man of his time, played
the much surer game. He put himself at the head of that The democratical interest being the interest
interest which he had undertaken to destroy, to be destroyed he determ and ac succeeded
in destroying it. The democratical interest being the enemy
he had marked out for destruction, he pretended professed the
most zealous attachment to it, and put himself obtained
the confidence of those whose zeal was sincere, was by those
means placed at the head of it, and by means of the confidence
that reposed in him succeeded in destroying it.
