Bentham's views on religion were controversial during his lifetime; so much so that John Bowring, Bentham's literary executor, chose to exclude Bentham's writings on religion from the Works of Jeremy Bentham published between 1838 and 1843. By examining the original manuscripts Bentham scholars have begun to assess Bentham's attitude to religion. Bentham advocated a full-scale reform of the Church, arguing that 'religion is an engine, invented by corruptionists, at the command of tyrants, for the manufactory of dupes'. To find out more on Bentham and religion, see the manuscripts listed below. The manuscripts have been sub-categorised according to difficulty level.
