a paper of Sir George Shuckburgh Evelyn’s
as having being that which in fact suggested
to me the idea of submitting the enclosed
paper to your notice
The particular pleasure I reaped derived from
it, was partly as an article on the score of curiosity,
partly on account of the practical applications
that might as it seemed to be, be made
of the views contained in it, was became productive
of a proportionable degree of attention: but and
as was natural in the course of that attention, some observations
presented themselves, as requisite to
give warning of the errors that I of which
in the application of it to practice, it
might otherwise be productive.
The application justness of any application
that may be made of will depend
upon two theories: the theory of the influence
of money on prices, and the theory of samples
in regard to price: the latter a subject as
yet absolutely untouched: and the former
not so yet handled but so as to leave a great
deal of room for the correction of errors, as
well as for the filling up of blanks.
