father’s business for some time before he
studied the law, and professes to be perfectly
acquainted with all its details. He wishes
to possess himself of this plant, and afterwards
to associate with him in the business Mr St Marc,
who it seems is acquitted of all blame by
the creditory, has a competent knowledge of
the art, and is from practice acquainted
with the mode of conducting business here —
Thro his means, or some other, Mr Rey says
he can raise money for carrying on the business,
and that all he shall therefore want to be
accommodated with, is £200, instead of
£300 which he, at first, supposed he should
require — but as some other persons are desirous
of making the purchase, it seems necessary
that he should be at once prepared to decide,
lest they should step in and supersede him.
I undertook therefore to make this explanation
to you forthwith. He proposes a reference for
more particular information as to the merits of

the concern, to a lawyer employed on the part
of the creditors, whose address he is to send
me this morning, and whom if you think
it worth while — I will call upon.

His notion is, that this business will afford
him subsistence, with the sacrifice of only a
small portion of his time in superintendence;
while if reduced to the necessity of teaching
languages or translating books for a living, he
will have no time left for labour in the
vineyard of the cause —

Of the probability of the success fulfillment a disappointment
of his expectations, if enabled to execute
his project, I am unable to form an opinion —
trade in all its branches is languid — but he
has satisfied himself that this is profitable.
the Excise is a troublesome and dangerous
supervisor — but he depends upon “bonne foi”
and the experience and prophylactic prudence
of his associate; for keeping clean of its grasp. the
old concern having had nothing to complain
of on that score.
