in conjunction with you, I doubt not the probity of this
gentleman, but I fear much that from the circumstance
of Orlando being a connection of his, and
both Islanders, that the people of the continent
may suspect some treachery and unfair dealing, and
as many of the military chiefs are certainly averse in
toto to a loan from an apprehension of their power
being destroyed by it, this circumstance & the jealousy
already existing between the Islands and the Continent
will make an excellent handle for them to create
dissensions. If the Gentlemen connected with the
loan, were desirous of a Greek being nominated, as
one of the Commissioners it would have been better to
appoint some one resident in the Ionian Islands,
Iuastathi would have been an eligible person,
being an honest, zealous & intelligent man, but his residence
at Head Quarters would perhaps prove an
obstacle : a Gentleman resident in Cephalonia, which
Island has the advantage of being a central point
would be preferable and thus Count Delladecima
from his tried fidelity to the cause, or some other competent
person might have been named.
