of Patras, which I trust will speedily surrender
(Modona & Corone being of secondary importance)
is in the undisturbed possession of the Greeks
I cannot then see the necessity of keeping so many
soldiers there, a feasible method of inducing them to
march out of the Peloponesus, would be for the Government
to grand additional pay to those who
serve upon the frontiers & in face of the enemy: from
what I observed in Greece these armed men, especially
those of Collocotroni, only proved a source of alarm
& vexation to the peasantry, committing much rapine &
disorder, in the names of their respective chiefs, this
wd. also prove a good method of reducing the power of
their masters, as soldiers of course will serve those by
whom they are best paid & the resources of these Chiefs
being very much exaggerated, they cd. not long sustain
the competition. The population of Navarin &
Calamata wd. prove quite sufficient to keep in check
