Forcing upon a man a law assistant whom he is compelled to pay is oppressive and extortionate. The right of pleading ones own cause in
one's own person and without the obligation of
making use of forced assistance is of all rights

considered as a natural and indefensible one.
To refuse a man the right of speaking on his
own behalf is to condemn him him unheard: to force to condemn
