Secret this sovereign tribunal can never be professed or entertained
without the reserve more or less explicit
of an appeal to the same tribunal when better
informed.

In the cases in which the judgments of the
public for want of that instruction which
Time and Nature are now not backward in
disseminating remain still chargeable with
contra self-contradiction and inconsistency
and self-contradiction th an appeal of this
sort is not only justifiable but inevitable:
since the same man can not possibly embrace
both together of two contradictory propositions
knowing them for what they are: and a man
without any impeachment of the supremacy of
that tribunal before which he pleads may say
though it is against me today I am not in
the wrong: for if its it is against me on
one point it is for me on another: and it
wants nothing but time to weigh the force of
such reasons as I have to present to it, in
order to reconcile itself with itself and come
over altogether to my side.
