6 The influence of plurality in judicature upon the qualities desirable in a Judge is unfavourable in proportion as the plurality recedes from unity . To the dependence of this species of officer
on public opinion, and thence to his probity,
as well as reputation for probity, the devision
of its powers among numbers will be found is unfavourable
in every point of view, [and unfavourable in
proportion to their the number multitude .] Unity in for this
station will be found we shall find in every point respect of view
preferable for this purpose to multitude: and
multitude disadvantageous in proportion as it
rises above recedes from unity. The same thing will appear
with regard to exertion: and with regard to
skill and intelligence in as far as they depend
upon exertion: nor will the advantage chance gained in
point of intelligence skill from communication of intelligence
be found to compensate in any degree
the disadvantage relative to those other points.
