Law Amendments
11Propositions
(2) (11 §. No Oath
32
Uselessness of the oath
as to non believers
In the character of a security against falshood The ceremony of an oath must be acknowledged to be without of no
effect not only on persons not believing in a God, not only on
persons not believing in the religion of Jesus, but on persons who
believing in the religion of Jesus do not believe that it is in
the power of man by this causing this ceremony to be performed.
to give deter each at his own pleasure, on any occasion and
for any purpose at pleasure determination to the will of God.
33
When an oath has
any effect it is from
fear of some one two
or all the 3 lots of punishment
1. at the hands
of the Almighty 2 at the
hands of the law 3 at the
hands of public opinion
It is clear that in the character case/instance of a security against
all persons entertaining any of these opinions just mentioned, in the
character of a security against falshood the ceremony taken by itself can
not impossibly have any effect and that wherever in so far as
in a consequence of the ceremony any such effect is produced, the
cause by which it is produced is — not the ceremony itself
n not the fear of punishment for the act which is proved a violation
of the ceremony — but the fear of punishment no three
distinguished the three distinguishable lots of punishment
some one, have in all of them to wit punishment at the hands of
the Almighty, punishment at the hands of the law, and punishment
at the hands of public opinion.
