INTRODUCTION.C II
BOOK 1st OF OFFENCES in General. CH. Of

OFFENCES PRINCIPAL & ACCESSORY

Upon taking a general Review of the several Sorts
of Acts that stand as Offences in the various Systems
of Jurisprudence, we may observe this remarkable
Difference among them, that whereas from some
of them a Current of Misery (if I may be allowed the
Expression) may be readily traced as issuing forth
immediately on their Perpetration, in others no
such Appearance is observable: on the contrary
detaching them in
idea
it is but insulating them in Idea and supposing
them unprolific of any consequential Acts, and
they will appear perfectly harmless and indifferent.
Thus upon the Event of a Person's having
received under the Name of a Guinea a piece of
Metal which is counterfeit and of no Value,
in Lieu of which he has paid what is equivalent
to a real Guinea, we observe immediately the
Mortification he must Experience at finding
himself bereft of so much of his Property: on
the other hand, if we carry back our Imagination
to the Act of fabricating of this very Piece, whether
by the Person who thus put it off or by any
other
