INTRODUCTION.
We can at any rate better tell what are own
sensations than what is the nature, & what the
good pleasure, any farther than we see it actively
executed, of the Deity.
By the examining enquiring therefore what are the sensations
of the persons affected, upon the commission
of any each crime, we shall stand a better chance
of coming at the understanding+ + knowledge acquiring a true notion of it's malignity
[both absolute that is considered by itself, & comparative
that is considered put in comparison with that of every
other] that is of the degree of evil influence it
has upon our happiness, that is, in fine our sensations,
than by reading texts going in chase after texts out of a
book in which no intention of marking the
proportion between any crimesdifferent degrees of malignity of crimes is any
were discover'd.
The divine Author of our Religion has left
either none or but few & scatter'd + + hints much less rules rules for the
attainment of the happiness of this life in as
far as it depends upon the conduct of the state to
the rulers governors to the ruled it's subjects
But let us not deny a fact so manifest, nor
dissemble a fact so important; merely because
we are unable to account for it.
Founding our notions upon Investigating Enquiring what is politically right & wrong
through the medium by enquiring what is the will of the Deity in that
behalf as it stands in revelation, we have a
we build foundation for our enquiries which is comparatively obscure: but founding endeavouring to
them applying them || || as some have done upon something that is not the principle not to the standard of utility
of utility, nor yet upon of revelation, we have none
foundation at all
If there be any who. . . .
If they have the courage to believe that what
appears [in spite of all their efforts] confused
obscure & unsatisfactory is so in its own nature,
that the fault is not in their own intellects
but in the intelligence of an author[s]
born in the infancy of the Science- . . . .
I will call upon them to,let them cast all prejudices behind them, &
follow me with candour but with scrutiny
while I pursue this line [needle] of utility, and to brave- - - endeavour to fecundate that seed of
knowledge which Beccaria hath sown.
who have for the public good, to submitt to the fatigue
& not a hypocritical submission to opinions professed rather than entertained believed by the thoughtless world.
