There are two cases in which a man is
called upon to give the definition of a
word : 1st where the sense he gives to it
is new: 2dly Where the sense he finds
belonging to it is obscure
It may be obscure in either of two accounts ways.
1stBy being strange : 2dly by being ambiguous:
In the first case, men do not
know not which of all the ideas that
they have belongs to it: they cannot
pretend to think of giving it any one in
particular: they remain ignorant.
In the 2d case, they know not which of
two of three, to give to it: those ideas
being of him, of themselves <add>naturally</add> and contending a further affinity
by their common subjection to the same word
start up one for another: sometimes one, sometimes men take up

with one, when for the better of the proper time
into which the word enters to be true, they
should have taken up the other: They
think they know, and do not: they are
worse than ignorant; they are mistaken
