When once a man has resolved upon the attainment of a
flagitious end, the not putting in practise means which
are not further flagitious than as they conduce to that end,
(one may even say that are more flagitious than that end itself) is not virtue but stupidity.
Such inventions of delinquents are not to be considered as
new — as the offspring of latter times: from the very first by a discerning eye they
were to be read in the Heart &c in the Head of man.
Was it for example necessary for a man to be habituated
to the observation of new-fangled modern iniquities in order to
know, that it must often happen that a man would not
go to Court of Just to give a piece of testimony that was
wanted of him if he was to be loser by going, or a gainer
by staying away? Yet to this Hour, this inconvenience —
except in a few instances remains unprovided for,
or was it more so in order to know that a man who would steal
a guinea if he saw it in a purse would steal a Dog that
he could get a guinea for — Yet was it but the other day,
that this mischief received its remedy.

to craft, I would not call that an increase of vice, when the
community has profited by the change — profited by the
change it has, for who does not see, though it were not —
