in a word the Law succeeds in giving; over in
the first place according as the ideas of signs of
the motives it creates are adapted to the
Means expression in which it consists of it is adapted to the Will
understanding: and in the next place according as the matter
of it is adapted to the Will.
There The of adapting the Law
The considerations that are to be observed in adapting the What measures are to be taken to adapt them
matter of them to the understanding Will we have consider'd
in the former books: obliged as to the expression
of them being adapted to the understanding, it in the mean time to suppose the expression
is what we were obliged all along tacitly to of them to be adapted to the understanding:
suppose. for it is by means only through the medium of the
understanding that the a Law like
any other combination of ideas must can finds its passage
makes its way to the Will.
---page break---
At present therefore our business is with
the means to be taken to adapt the a
collection of Laws to the understanding: that is to
resuming once more the words term we first yet
made choice of out with to cause it each person to possess
the Law: to possess it that is by his understanding in such manner as is necessary
to its being obey'd his giving it obedience.
Apprehensibility Precision Brevity Order Simplicity
Before a man can possess a map of Laws by his
understanding, it must have made his it's way thither
through the proper organ, the through
the eye, or through the ear. Through the
Eye if promulgated by writing, through the
ear if promulgated only by speech.
His being able possessing it will therefore depend
upon the measures that shall have been taken
for two purposes. First for that of conveying it
to his corporeal organs. 2dly for fitting it to his conception
---page break---
The measures for conveying it to his corporeal
organs, in a word for promulgating it to
him, belong to the head of Promulgation.
They will be consider'd at large in the book
thus named. that bears + + distinguished by that title.
Those that are requisite to the fitting it for
his conception belong to the title of the present are what our business is with
at present. Taking it for granted that it the instrument
it is written on, or the sounds it is deliverd in will find it's way to his eyes and ears, we
are to consider what intrinsic properties it
must possess should have to fit it for being efficaciously possessed.
