BARRETRY

The merit which is to distinguish one project on this subject from another, consists not t so
much ] in the discovery of expedients which are not obvious, as that in [the rejection of those] a proper selection out of <add>of one </add> the many
which are obvious and improper.

The multitude, which finds so many occasions to complain of the Law feels nothing like moderation
towards the abuses among wh it's profession: Were it to chuse, the most violent expedients would commonly
be those which would most please. The male-practices of men of Law The spinning out of the principles of men's common Nature are ones of
a single profession: and men have no mercy for vices which are not their own. +

That such male-practices are but too frequent is not to be dissembled: the voice of the
people declares as much, which is seldom wrong (as a celebrated distinguished writer observes) in it's feelings
of the existence of misconduct, tho' not often right in it's speculations concerning the cause of
it" to which we may add and scarce ever concerning the proper means of cure.
