C
Of Offences by Falshood
Indirect Legislation
Different species of falshood demand different measures
The expedient that can Under the head of
indirect legislation which different measures
will be applicable to the different species of falshood
here established: whence arises an additional
reason for establishing them.
Indirect legislation as applied to ordinary falshood
Against ordinary falshood I can think of no
measure of indirect legislation unless it be the characteristic
punishment above proposed. It is a measure
of direct legislation with respect to any particular
offence to which it is considered as being applied.
But considered with regard to any other offence it
may be considered regarded in the light of a measure of
indirect legislation operating (as has been already
intimated) in the character of a moral lesson.
To this head also may be referred the endeavours
which the legislator might employ in the way of exhortation
to induce those who have the education of
youth to take every occasion to of inculcating into
them a steady regard to truth attention to veracity, and an abhorrance aversion
of the opposite vice.
