defraudment. The subjects to which this is most frequently
applied are the instruments which operate as evidence
of the disposition of property, such as bills promissory notes, bills of exchange,
promissory no conveyances of land deeds serving to record
contracts, conveyances of land, whether inter vires
or by will &c. &c.| Against the forgery of these especially

forgery by fabrication, the practice of registration
affords an effectual expeditient. By this means instead
of being remaining exposed to the delinquency of an indefinite
multitude of persons unknown, the parties interested
are exposed to the single delinquency of one select person who
is known, the officer to whose charge the register is committed.
It is not however to every disposition of property
that the expedient can be applied with equal
facility. In the first instance it can be applied only
to such only as admit of a certain interval betwen the
first opening of the negotiation and the conclusion of
it: such as is commonly the case for instance with wills and
other conveyances of land: such an interval, for instance
as during whichthe business might wait without inconvenience
for the to be found by the register conclusion of the proof of registration. It cannot
be applied in the first instance, not least to such business as oftentimes need to
be concluded as soon as opened such as the drawing or
indorsement of a bill of exchange. It does not follow however
