Undenominated falshoods may be distinguished
in the first place into ordinary falshood and
fucation. Ordinary falshood is that where a man which seeks
to influence belief in the part of another, by
expressing a corresponding belief on one's own
part. Fucation is a name (from fucus, paint
or varnish) is a name that may be given to
falshood, when it seeks to influence belief on
the part of another in a more an immediate manner
without than by expressing belief on the part of any person only
by altering the appearances of things themselves
To explain the meaning and justify the creation
of this latter term, and at the same time to
shew that between this and the former the subject
is exhausted; it will be necessary to
take a higher post in the region of Metaphysics take the matter up a little higher.
If a man endeavours upon any occasion to influence
your belief respecting any fact, it will be is evident
that there are but two ways in which he
