Ins. Offences against Condition — Adultery

55.

From p. 15. Ins. Morality loose x rigid According to the rigid system this practise is
reprobated absolutely and with a very high degree
of censure. It is reprobated were it only on the
footing of fornication; but besides that it is reprobated
on a footing of it's own.

56.

Loose — the Woman According to the loose system it is reprobated
or not, and where it is reprobated it is reprobated
with a degree of censure more or less severe, according
to circumstances. In the woman, it is
condemned in the general even here: but some
allowance is made in case of any flagrant instance
of cruelty or neglect on the part of the
Husband; in which cases it is censured rather as
a violation of modesty than of social duty: accordingly
it is the more censured according as it
becomes more public either by the fault of the woman
or by her misfortune.

57.

Loose — the man In the woman it is not reprobated in the
general independently of circumstances. A man
[who is thought to be in the practise of it] It renders
a man rather an object of affection to the woman, &
of envy to the men. In certain cases one case, so far from
being reprobated, the declining to engage in it is reprobated. In France they have a particular name for a man who has signalized himself in this way — It is called a man is hommes fortunes
If a man having received an invitation
from a woman should decline accepting it
especially if on pretence of virtue if not from want of
inclination, he would be treated with scorn & derision by

NOTE

Besides the particular reason that applies to this
particular kind of misconduct, there is a general reason
which applies to all instances of misconduct, why the censure
of the world is more severe upon an act of delinquency
in proportion as it is [the] more public.
