NOTORIETY. Hodge-Podge. 22.C.2.46

Another Statute The Title to which it is to
not less worthy one attention for the long windedness of its title is the following 22.G.2.2.66
with the full long-winded
Title to which I must allow
to itself.

An Act to continue several Laws for preventing
eviction of the Occupiers of wears & Locks & Wears upon
the Lower Thomas Westward, & for ascertaining the Rates of Water
Carriage upon the said Rivers & for continuing, explaining & amending
the several Laws for the better Regulation of Attornies and Sollicitors; &
for regulating the Price & of Bread; & for preventing

R.Y. NOTORIETY Hodge - Podge 22.G.2.46

This Title is one of those compositions [which an] peculiarly
formed to elevate & surprize

In the first place one should might be apt to chagrin that after
the words "continue several Laws", every "for"
began a fresh Law or set of Laws, which
were to be continued by virtue of those words without more ado - it
is no such thing: that about the Thames is
the only one to which nothing is given but a
continuance: the rest are all continued explained
& amended and to the bargains it being the verbs
"continuing, explaining & amending" being those
which ware jointly applicable to the several
Sentances prefaced by a "for" that follow
them: & not the single one "continuing" of that
the which goes before

In the next place, one is apt to wonder cannot help considering a little how
how it should happen that the Attorneys are
thus wedged in with the Cattle in
each of them, or Layer of Cattle and then a layer of Attornies & Cattle

NOTORIETY 4.

except one that will be mentioned by & by unless in J. 21.Jul. 28

The most extant multifarious Hodge Podge that extant
is that of 3. Car.4. which repeals perpetuates 8
Statutes or parts of Statutes, continuances & 6 other
to the next Session, & repeals 9: & here too
there are several original Clauses inserted:
These 56 Statutes are all perpetuated in
the Lump by an Act of the i next Parliament
in that reign As it was uncertain when they should meet again it was necessary to make no long tarrying - What would the Reader a man keep imagine
to be the Title of that Act? "An Act for the
further relief of his Majesty's army & the northern
parts of the Kingdom."

The manner how Clause by which this is done 'tho like were to
digress a little ass lead us into a reform not unworthy our atten our attention

The text is a 'Let all the Acts which were
continued by 3<hi rend='superscript'>rd Car. 1st c.lc. be made perpetual</hi>

The Paraphrase runs thus COMPOS. Hodge Podge Acts.

NOTORIETY Hodge Podge G.2.46

super-stratum: But this is a Deception: <note> and the contorions which the Lawyer <add>Draughtsman put his Intellect to to do it </note></add> they are
is none of these in the Act self. The perception moves on with perfect regularity and decorum: arranged with perfect regularity placed - 1st comes the
River Thames, then the Atternics, after then
the Bread, next the Horned Cattle, next
the Countess of Chester and Lancaster; then the
Hundreders: & the Quakers bring up the Rear.

It could be nothing but it was without doubt the community of where its between all these sorts of personages that doubtless could be the an inducement with the compiler thus to address them all under one cover
It was absolutely necessary all these sorts of personages
should be perfectly acquainted with the
concerns of each other what concerned the interests of

From all thin Indeed it may be observed in general - - it is, that if in
the title of any Statute along with an intimation
of a number of distinct subjects about upon which
some legislative operation is to be performed
we find any where intersperced the words
continuing amending revisity perpetuity &
so forth it is many to me against a man's
guessing right what it is that is to be done even with after all the help & the presentation can afford
with either. ang of them ?
