Turnpike-Surveyors and Tollgatherers.
Observations.

Sect. ViI of less Law, & that better: in point of bulk, it is upon this that it depends whether the Law as to so
much of it shall be of a given bulk, or of a hundred times as much; in point of propriety, as the
number of occasions, throughout the Law, on which a clause to a given effect comes to be demanded, is
to unity, so is the chance which that clause has, of being well expressed on every one of them, if [it
is to be] worded for every one in the same manner, to that which it has, if [it is to be] worded differently
on each.

The original three passages included in brackets the reader will observe to be wanting in the original: the two
first of them had been inserted upon the former occasion we have been speaking of; in recompense,
the "not being before accounted for" is first visible on this.

As to the first — did it there appear any thing particular in "the situation of the persons here in
question so as to render it improper to require that any certain interval of notice should be given?
if so, it might have been as well to have intimated as much, by saying "within a competent time,"
instead of "within" [so many] days." as here.

As to the second — it seems still more necessary, if there be any difference, in this place than in
the other: inasmuch as persons of the inferior class now before us are the most likely to be disposed
of themselves, and to fall into advice that may dispose them to stand upon the cavil which
this passage is calculated to exclude.
