The same objections would lie against
making the law of Nature the foundation
of municipal Law: even supposing allowing such a law to exist: & to be learnable in the manner our Author suppo supposes. For even he has allowed with this additional
circumstance: that as it is not quite so
easy to define what is the law of Nature,
as it is to define what is we mean by the law of
Revelation: there would scarcely therefore remain
any no rule of obedience at all. For one man,
conceiving might conceive would find one municipal law to be contrary
to his idea of the law of nature, and
another a second another: and therefore, according
to our Author's rule, no State could
enforce obedience to any. At all times,
& among all men this inconvenience
would arise: that we must confound
two very different ideas: that which is
expedient Lawful, with and that which is Lawful expedient.
Note
Lune chose, signified, to value a thing: whereas in
truth it signifys to avail oneself of it: to draw advantages
from it.
