OATHS.
Oaths may be introduced with
advantage, where men are compelled to the conduct, which
it is meant to put a stop to,
by moral considerations only:
for this being stronger than

men in virtue of such offices in
which Oaths are required are
exposed may be pretty well depended upon

There is it seems, a Liturgy composed by one
Dr Priestly, a man who though he has the misfortune
not to be orthodox is known as much to his
advantage in the republic of letters, and that of
Science, & of Christianity as if he were - it is
as I have heard the design of this performance, to
clear the expressions of men's devotion from the than
controversial entanglements which are as foreign
to the purpose of true piety as an adversary the contests about them to human
happiness & reason. I have heard it remarked

matter, whether from the prejudice of education
or the conviction of my own mind which says feels as if
it were sincere, or from what other cause I have been accustomed I have been accustomed from my infancy & continue in my manhood, to
prefer to any Christian composition I have yet seen
and should probably to this which I have not seen,
