<p>Time is nothing but the inveterate error that <add>the best</add> God<lb/>
way of pleasing God, is to do what is <unclear>most</unclear> <add>un-</add>pleasing<lb/>
or abstain from what is most pleasing to ourselves<lb/>
that can account for the notion that <add>has</add> obtained<lb/>
<add>so long that it wears off more &amp; more every day.</add>
of the unlawfulness of many Pastimes on the <lb/>
Sabbath-Day. Not a syllable to countenance <lb/>
this, is to be met with in the Gospel &#x2014; The <lb/>
Law given to the Jews indeed enjoys the abstinence <lb/>
from the ordinary labor: it appoints that day for a day <lb/>
<add>of rest.</add>  So that if ever there was a point left indifferent <lb/>
by Religion, it is this. </p>
 
<p>Even granting the propriety <add>duty <add>is to be in strictness + duty</add></add> to fill up the whole <lb/>
day by the exercises of devotion; still <add>no reason</add> it must be <lb/>
<add>can be shown why</add> allowed that <del>any</del> all <gap/> employments that <lb/>
do not come within that description, are upon <lb/>
a level. No reason can be shown why that duty <lb/>
is more violated by walking after a ball, than by <lb/>

SABBATH. Pastimes
