Thus they have so ordered matters that [throughout
life] so long as the fear of God has any hold influence upon
a man's his mind, every young man who under their
ministry has drunk of the cup of perjury finds his peace
of mind feels himself dependent for his
peace of mind dependent on the assurance persuasion of their
being in possession of a virtually dispensing power:
a power of forgiving sins — a power of washing
away all the guilt of perjury, leaving behind nothing
but the profit, with which they have contrived to couple it.
