Ch. 4. Excellence-haters
§.1. Exposition & Exposure
3 1
Ch
Ch. Excellence-hater's or Excellence-abhorrers or Perfectibility-
drainer's device.
This after Popular-Corruption-pleader's? as cutting off all hope.
§.1. Exposition and Exposure
1
This fallacy is
seldom hazarded
without having in
readiness for its support
the Bad-principle
imputer's fallacy
ex consentamis
This fallacy is naturally and generally if not
necessarily connected with another, viz. one of the modifications
of the Vituperative-personality-alterers fallacy device
viz. the Bad-principle inferrer's of whose device aphorism
is — noscitur ex consentamis.
2
Openly and directly to vituperate
excellence as excellence
might be too much
for effrontery to venture
for imbecillity to
endure.
To say nakedly and bluntly — Excellence,
perfection is the object of my abhorrence — it is for
itself, for its own sake thus I abhor it, would might be too
much for the effrontery even of this class of politicians: too much
to practice in the way of effrontery on the one hand part, too
much to expect in the way of irrational acquiescence
on the other.
3
Accordingly ask
the man why he
abhorrs the idea
of perfectibility, or
rather unability,
answer — because
maintained by Priestly,
Condorcet, Godwin &c
Ask one of these abhorrers of every thing that is
most good why it is that he abhorrs it — his answer
is ready at hand — This is one of your French principles
this is a principle that was maintained by your Priestlys
your Condorcets, your Godwins, &c &c.
