Thermometers - size
and mode of collocation.

1. Size should be large

Reasons.

1. The scale being large
the place will be the
more promptly ascertainable
in the faint
light.

2. The thermometer
will be the less sensible:
and as a degree
or two will probably
not be material
if it were sensible,
it would be the less adapted
to observation
out of the Frigidarium:
since in the interval
between extraction
and observation
it would have undergone
the greater change.

56

Thermometer Collocation.

In the Balneum, to
being the thermometers
with their scales, tie
so many pieces of cord
round the shelves:
hang a loop or ring
in any point of the length
of the cord: and in
that loop hang the
thermometer by a hook
attached to the loop of the
scale.

Sink it by a bullet
at the bottom of the scale

57

Suspend three thermometers
at 3 different
heights:viz.

1. Close to the bottom

2. In the middle.

3. Close to the top.

Thermometers Collocation

Reasons for the triplicity

1. To shew whether by the
heat of the earth beneath
(say Cellar heat, about
52) any and what
heat is communicated
to the superincumbent
strata of water, in such
manner as to overcome
the tendency to equalization
of heat, produced
by the influx &
efflux of the water.

2. To shew whether any
and what influence in
the temperature of the
water is produced by
sojournment: if any,
the superior strata are
those to which it will
be first communicated.

58

As, of the 4 branches
there will be only one
through which the water
will run, (after it has
been discharged by the
pump from the Ice
magazine) in a direct
current, the triple
line of thermometers
must be repeated in
the opposite trench,
if not in the intermediate
one.

taken to
make 24 Thermometers.

N.B. A few casks will
be requisite for Inclosing
Beans and Peas and French beans) in the)
shell. But as these will
not be bad till the
Bean and Pea season,
say July the casks
that will by that time
have been extracted
will suffice for this
fresh purpose.

62

The Beans and Peas
in shell should be tried
some with, some without
water in the casks

63

In like manner the
glasses which in winter
have been inserted and
extracted with milk
will in the fruit season
serve for strawberries &
raspberries, and peas
out of the shell:

64

The same or a size
somewhat larger will
save for cherries, raspberries, and beans
out of the shell.

Should the flesh fuel
in other states: it might
still succeed. if spat
up raw, or at least
if dressed, in fat.

But this part of the system
being a pie-alter
need not be tried
viz. so far as concerns
extraction, till the last
months of the

the contents of the Casks

Also to try the effect
of water on flesh in
this low temperature, add
14. In water

1. Hearts

68

The Balneum, if allotted
to casks only
would hold say 120

If only the half of
it was allotted to
casks it would
contain but

But since a less
portion will serve for
phials than will be
necessary for casks
25 phials (as for No46)
being containable in
the space of one cask,
a greater portion may
be allotted to casks than
to phials - say 2/3.
