those, persons who are idle, merely for want of employment. Unless I am
guilty of self-flattery, I may safely say, I have as many qualifications for such a situation, as any other person whatsoever: namely,
a sincere wish for the success of the undertaking; — a patient and
a persevering mind; — active in body, as well as temperate; — a
pretty accurate knowledge of mankind; — tolerably well acquainted
with the way of rogues & vagrants; — long practice as a Physician,
Apothecary, and Man-Midwife; together with an extensive
proficiency in Psalmody; than which, well selected and properly sung,
scarcely preaching has better effect in bringing about reformation
of manners.
