of defence indeed but of defence crowned all along with certain

all the prospects that had opened to it was devoted to perdition.
To sell it at the best price — to fight the good fight —
not of faith, but of despair — not to be wanting to one to
whom every body else & every thing else was wanting — such
was my only course. It was in truth that sort of game
which the facetious Chancellor describes himself as playing
with the tyrant whom he served the state the head of one
of the players; the contest, at what time and by what sort
of stroke it should be severed from the shoulders. Such it was

other to endure them: with this difference, that in the one
case, illustration & preeminence was the prize of pertinacious
and patient sufferance: in the other case, a distinction indeed,
but of that sort which consisted in being the visible but of
a train of injuries and indignities, of which, were th in the
annals of the Treasury, no example would be to be found.

beg leave in this place to bring the whole train of incidents
together at one view, distributed under different heads, as
well as the several documents & incidents comprized under
each head are made to follow one another in the order of
time with only two observations. The one consists in
bringing to view in the first place, and at a stage
