Charges against White

§. |^^^|. Charges against Joseph White Esquire
Sollicitor to the Treasury.

After the general charge of the conspiracy.

2. That whereas by a letter of direction transmitted
to him on or about the same day between
the 2d and 4th of May 1799 in pursuance of a
Minute of the Board of Treasury dated
of the 2d of May 1795 directing him directions were
given to him by authority of the said Board requiring him
to prepare an agreement a Contract or Agreement for and previous to the then
intended and scarce {in part} compleated purchase
of the Estate of the Marquis of Salisbury at Milbank
Westminster the said Joseph White on
being applied to by and on behalf of the parties interested+
did instead of declaring his readiness to
obey such directions as are duty bound, did openly and
in the presence of them the said Edward Estcourt and
Jeremy Bentham pertinaciously and repeatedly declare his determination not to
execute the said directions prepare any such previous
Contract or Agreement: and that accordingly
by reason of such disobedience of the said Sollicitor to the
said directions of the said Board no such Contract or Agreement was ever entered
or drawn up.

determine with himself to avoid if possible the
paying any obedience to such direction: and in pursuance
of such determination, and on being applied to the occasion
of a joint application made to him on the 4th of May
1795 by+ did openly and in the presence of them the
said Edmund Estcourt and Jeremy Bentham declare
his utter disapprobation of the measure which by the said
his determination not to prepare any agreement for
the said purpose
letter he was directed to carry into effect; and
did thereupon moreover declare his determination not the prepare
any such agreement or by the said letter he was directed to
prepare, but to proceed upon the Conveyance its confine his
proceeding to the preparation of the Conveyance itself; he then
said
