This much being established and put out of
doubt - that, to Lord Belgrave- for one, at least - the sacrifice
of the establishment was declared to be made - the only
question at all exposed to doubt is- whether or no the
decree for the sacrifice of the establishment had not already
taken place before the proposal was made to me of the
Salisbury Estate as an Estate to be purchased for the use
of it. The former proposition your Lordship has already
seen established by direct proof and will see still more
firmly established by a continually accumulating body of
circumstantial evidence: the opinion to be given on the
other must establish itself as well as a it can upon
the basis of circumstantial evidence alone. Such then is
that which it remains for me to bring forward in
the course of the present section.

One thing I must beg of your Lordship to observe &
to remember viz: that to any purpose of my own - or of
the establishment on the fate of which all my purposes
are involved - which of the two hypotheses be resorted to
is matter of the most compleat indifference.- The only
reason for mentioning the latter of them in this view is
lest if that very probable though not demonstrable proposition had not
been brough forward the probability of it, if discovered
without my indication, might have been too hastily regarded
as a proof of error on my part, by the negative
it might be thought to put upon the other.-
