Vouchers not the best
evidence
8
In the individual case in question, as it happens,
that certain "papers" have (to use the words of the act
in the purpose clause above referred to) been "lost": certain papers
which had they been forthcoming might and would
have been delivered in, in the character of Vouchers
But, unfortunate as he is in respect of such loss,
the Accountant is not to such a degree unfortunate, enough as not to
possess, or have at his command, that which ( what to
so little purpose he tendered at the very outset,) viz. other
"evidence" "other evidence of actual payment" + and in the matter instance + Chief Inspectors Query 5th)
of two at least, out of the only three items here in question
evidence not only in whatever shape may be deemed the best, and but likewise from the same source, as that from which
( as for as he has been able at least in the darkness and ambiguity of his oracle
has enabled him to conjecture) evidence, in a shape
so much inferior, would have found a readier
acceptance.
Out of the parcels of goods sent from the same
place (the Iron Foundry at Sheffield Park) at so many
different times, in the instance of three, he was fortunate had the
enough (as he thought) good fortune (for such it seemed to him) to have preserved documents,
viz. Invoices by which, from the absence of all
objection to them, and from the call made for three other
such, he concludes all "characters of Voucher" are fortunately possessed.
which accordingly to and together with an account subsequently account given of the which <add> sum total by the same persons, he sent in with his said Account, to help serve as Vouchers:
and, out of six bills of exchange drawn upon him by
for the payment of those the said goods, by the said furnishers
of them, he had the further good fortune also fortunate enough to find himself in
possession of like P but one, viz. five: a condition in which he could not
have been, without payment of the sums respectively drawn for: and
which who he but in like manner. any other supposed vouchers he sent in this at the same time for the same purpose.
[+] As to the other six , upon
reflection I have
satisfied myself how it
has happened that I
have it not in my own
possession. The five first
having been paid by
on my account by my
Bankers (Martin and Co)
directly
came to me along
with in the character of
Vouchers belonging to this
Account, with in of the
sixth it appears from
Booth and Co's Account that it was paid: but in my Account with my Bankers no other than the above five are to be found.
It must therefore have been paid by him: and this agrees with a specific recollection of mine on this head. [+]2
[+2] But observing that if I had this
next Bill so paid by him, it
would not on this occasion stand
me in any stead since a stamped
receipt for the same total would not
the less be required if I forbear
giving him on this occasion a degree of
which promises not to be
of any use.
