<p>Though for the present purpose it may suffice, yet in this <lb/>statement, were it ever to be made public, I fear I should be found not <lb/>to have done justice to the good economy of the Philadelphian Managers.</p><p> In this prison, throughout the whole of the former year 1801, <lb/>the system of management pursued was the comparatively disadvantageous<lb/>one above mentioned, viz the carrying on a variety of <lb/>manufacturing concerns, in which, as such, <hi rend="underline">profit and loss</hi> by <hi rend="underline">buying</hi><lb/><hi rend="underline">and selling</hi>, was complicated with profit by <hi rend="underline">wages of Labour</hi>.</p><p>In the year 1802, this less advantageous system<lb/>(the trades being all <hi rend="underline">ordinary</hi> trades) was relinquished for the more <lb/>advantageous system, consisting in the letting out the labour of the <lb/>prisoners; taking this for the sole source of profit, d<hi rend="superscript">o</hi> <hi rend="underline">by wages of labour</hi><lb/>simply, unencumbered with profit and loss by <hi rend="underline">buying and selling.</hi><lb/>This most simple of the two systems is the only one which, in the <lb/>Panopticon prison, I should have pursued, in the case of such <lb/>prisoners as, in that situation, would have been employed, <lb/>as above, each man in his own original trade.
