1. Synonimous terms to be as much as possible [always] Synonimous terms
to be avoided
avoided: for Ex: Rectangle, Oblong, Long-Square &c
—
2. Words that have various meanings to be confined Words of Various
Meanings confined
to one
to one of those meanings, and other words substituted
to express the rest.
—
3. In announcing a Proposition use the most general General Terms
instead of confined
in Propositions
terms instead of more confined: for Example,
the general term Boundary, instead of the confined
one Base, Side &c
—
4. Not to make the Imagination commit and error altho' Errors of
Imagination
you correct it afterward: for example, do not say a
line must be drawn from any point in a circle to
the Circumference, and afterward say it must go
through the Center; but say "a line must be drawn
from the point through the Centre to the
Circumference".—

Beginners are apt to confound the notion of the whole content
Area confounded
with the Boundaries
of Figures or Area of a figure with that of the mere boundaries. The
idea I used to have of the Square of a Line (and I know in
this I was not Singular) was four times that line;
because it had four such Lines for its boundaries, and those
boundaries only are represented to the Eye. In a Circle,
in like manner, I used to consider nothing but the
circumference: so that the Ideas of the word Circle and
circumference of a Circle were the same. This is not by
any means to be wondered at: how should the Idea of
the learner be otherwise than confused, when that of the
Master is no better? Many are the instances in which
the Ideas of a Circle and its CIrcumference, and of the
boundaries of Triangles and their Areas, stand confounded,
as well by Euclid as by all his Editors.

Errors of expression or language must take from the credit 6
of the Meaning.
—
Use the Words longest and shortest as relative expressions
Longer & Shorter
Greater & less
when used. in treating Lines, greater and lesser in treating of
Figures and Angles: Greatness signifying more than
Length.
