II. Morphoscopes
§. Media of demonstration
1. Interaction of Inconsistency.
§. Of the media or say instruments or say media of invention, demonstration
including demonstration and effectuation employable and employed in Form-regarding Mathematics
or say Morphoscopic Posology.
§. Means of demonstration.
1. Identification of inconsistency.
In apt morphoscopic
all is supposition
—or say hypothetical:
who of
every his suppositions that
are inconsistent with
our matter, the one or
the other is not must be
false.
Absurdity is not the proper word: impossibility is
not the proper word inconsistency is the proper word.
All that is said in the field of morphoscopes all
that is said is said in the way of supposition: Those of Supposition
there are some which are consistent with one
another; others that are not: a sentence a proposition
tha by which expression is given to two mutually inconsistent
suppositions is a self-contradictory sentence or sayfalse proposition.
By the account thus given of it, who is there who, reading this
does not see that the true state of the case is expressed: How
comes it then that this is not the account given of it, by
Euclid, or any of the Geometricians, his followers? It can
in this way: namely that they took their own mere suppositions
were taken by them for realities in their minds the idea of
non-existence and existence been confounded and rendered
indistinguishable. In Euclid's Elements this confusion
exemplified itself in the very first sentence. In his own mind
he had found the supposition
of a thing so
minute as not to have
any part: what does
he thereupon? what does
he thereupon but assume
the existence of a thing
which has not any parts?
